I am pleased to announce that Hudson Public Schools received a Startalk grant to run a three-week summer camp in Portuguese Language and Culture!
Startalk grants are awarded by the National Security Agency and aim to increase the number of U.S. citizens learning and speaking critical need foreign languages, that is languages for which there is large demand for language professionals but little supply. Portuguese is considered to be a critical language in the US.
We will be offering two different programs: one for current 3rd and 4th graders with no previous knowledge of the language; and another one for current 5th, 6th & 7th graders, who are heritage speakers of Portuguese. The camp will take place at Quinn Middle School and will run Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm from June 23 to July 14 (we will observe the July 4 holiday).
This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the language and cultures of Portuguese communities around the world in a fun and relaxed environment; and thanks to the generous grant from the NSA, this camp is completely free, including classes, meals and field trips.
You will soon be receiving more information on the mail regarding this great opportunity, and on May 11 at 7 pm, there will be an information session about the program at Quinn Middle School. However, please do not hesitate to contact me in case you have any immediate questions.

STARTALK’s mission is to increase the number of U.S. citizens learning, speaking, and teaching critical need foreign languages. Our summer camp is funded by a grant from the United States National Security Agency (NSA) through the University of Maryland. The STARTALK Portuguese Language & Cultures Summer Camp is a fun packed Hudson Public Schools day camp that will develop students’ proficiency in Portuguese and their understanding of the cultures of Portuguese-speaking communities. This program targets current grade 3 & 4 non-Portuguese speakers and incoming grade 5, 6 & 7 Portuguese speakers.
What is a “critical language”?
Critical languages are languages for which there is large demand for language professionals but little supply. Portuguese is considered to be a critical language in the United States.
When does the program run?
Our program will support 30 students over 15 days from 6/23/17 – 7/14/17 and will provide students with 90 hours of immersion in the Portuguese language. All Teaching Staff are native speakers of Portuguese. Transportation is not be provided, parents will need to drive their student to and from camp each day. Camp starts at 8:00 am and ends at 2:00 pm.
What will a typical day at camp be like?
We will offer two classes: one for heritage speakers that aims at developing proficiency in Portuguese and appreciation for their heritage. The other for non-heritage speakers that will introduce them to the Portuguese language and cultures.
Through classroom instruction, games, and field trips, all students will gain knowledge that will help them to look at our region and world differently. Students will learn about the Portuguese culture and make new friends. They will be able to share cross-cultural skills and have better understandings of peoples’ lives. They will contribute to the cultural vitality of our community by sharing their positive experiences with families, classmates, and friends in our community.
Students will be given information on Portuguese resources within our community and online so they can further their Portuguese studies beyond the program.
